I just adopted another fur baby last week. As you know, I have a thing for cocker spaniels, and, with all my infinite wisdom, I can tell you they are the best breed ever. My sassy brother, the toy poodle lover, would beg to disagree, but it’s a toy poodle, so just forgive him.
Several weeks ago, my friend messaged me about a senior cocker that was being fostered by a local rescue. Sammy is a 13 year old cocker spaniel. She was an owner-surrender at the Humane Society, and, luckily, the rescue stepped in and saved her. Did you know when a dog is older than five years, they are considered unadoptable? The reason the owner gave her up is because she was old, and they just didn’t have time for her. Sammy came in severely matted and had to be shaved. Additionally, she suffers from hearing loss and cataracts.
With her health issues, she is the best dog. She loves to be around us and the other two cocker spaniels. She is pleasant and mellow. She sleeps most of the time, so we’ve filled the house with dog beds and other soft areas to nap on. She gets along splendidly with our other fur babies. Sure, she probably won’t live more than 2-3 years, but it will be the best 2-3 years. We’ll take all the time she can live with us.
I’m not sure why people throw away old dogs. They really aren’t that much trouble, and they just want to be loved. If you are considering getting a dog, PLEASE consider adopting from a rescue or getting a senior dog. You won’t regret it.
